8 Reasons Why Students Should Go To College

8 Reasons Why Students Should Go To College I began wandering around campus with no company except my thoughts. Occasionally, Zora, my English teacher’s dog, would tag along and we’d walk for miles in each other's silent company. Other times, I found myself pruning the orchard, feeding the school’s wood furnaces, or my new favorite activity, splitting wood. Throughout those days, I created a new-found sense of home in my head. I wanted to see new places and meet different people. Since I wasn’t an exchange student anymore, I had the freedom--and burden--of finding a new school and host family on my own. After a few days of thorough investigation, I found the Struiksma family in California. In the years that followed, this experience and my regular visits to my allergy specialist inspired me to become an allergy specialist. Even though I was probably only ten at the time, I wanted to find a way to help kids like me. That night, the glow-in-the-dark ball skittered across the ice. My opponent and I, brooms in hand, charged forward. We collided and I banana-peeled, my head taking the brunt of the impact. He doesn’t tell us what they mean until the end of the essay, when he writes “I learned and was shaped by each of them.” Note that each essence image is actually a lesson--something he learned from each family. After I finished the exchange student program, I had the option of returning to Korea but I decided to stay in America. However, there are moments where the seconds stand still. The iTaylor’s best feature is its built-in optimism. Thanks to my positivity, I was chosen to give the morning announcements freshman year. I took on the state of what I like to call collaborative independence, and to my delight, I was elected to StuGo after my third year of trying. The heavy scuba gear jerks me under the icy water, and exhilaration washes over me. Lost in the meditative rolling effect of the tide and the hum of the vast ocean, I feel present. I dive deeper to inspect a vibrant community of creatures, and we float together, carefree and synchronized. My fascination with marine life led me to volunteer as an exhibit interpreter for the Aquarium of the Pacific, where I share my love for the ocean. Most of my time is spent rescuing animals from small children and, in turn, keeping small children from drowning in the tanks. ” and ending with “Have a marvelous Monday,” “Terrific Tuesday” or “Phenomenal Friday! ” My adjective-a-day keeps people listening, gives me conversation starters with faculty, and solicits fun suggestions from my friends. 25 therapy sessions, over 40 poems, not a single one didn’t mention my mom. I shared my writing at open mics, with friends, and I cried every time. I embraced the pain, the hurt, and eventually, it became the norm. I’ll never forget the time when a visiting family and I were so involved in discussing ocean conservation that, before I knew it, an hour had passed. Finding this mutual connection over the love of marine life and the desire to conserve the ocean environment keeps me returning each summer. I hold onto my time as dearly as my Scottish granny holds onto her money. I’m careful about how I spend it and fearful of wasting it. Now, I am the alarm clock for the 1,428 students of Fox Lane High School. For the past three years, I have been starting everyone’s morning with a bubbly, “Good morning, foxes! Stubborn as I was, even with a concussion, I wanted to remain in class and do everything my peers did, but my healing brain protested. My teachers didn’t quite know what to do with me, so, no longer confined to a classroom if I didn’t want to be, I was in limbo.

How To Write

How To Write Perhaps most important, this is an essay Rachel can’t wait to write. Get a jump start on a critical part of the college application process. Okay, maybe I’m overreacting â€" but I cannot for the life of me understand that award. Barnard wants 250 words, and she’ll expand the essay for Michigan. Because Rachel is still undecided about her major, she will also mention a few classes she’s excited about in subjects other than history. But first, she needs to brainstorm topics for the supplemental essays to make sure no topics overlap. Rachel, a devoted dog-lover, has volunteered at rescue organizations in three different countries, andâ€"surprise, surpriseâ€"the family has ended up adopting three dogs. Rachel could write the story of adopting each dog and how important volunteering was to her, while throwing in colorful details that illustrate her familiarity with each country. Rachel’s sense of humor is her signature; like her favorite character Yossarian, she sees absurdity in everything. Could she tweak some of her Catch-22 essay to write about humor under pressure? She’d have to use examples that show this trait, rather than simply insist she’s funny, which isn’t effective. The night before her operation, the doctor told us what could happen during brain surgery. Beth could become paralyzed, lose memory, and she could die. I have never been so sad and terrified in my entire life, and I was so angry that this had happened. As it turned out, Beth came through the surgery well and the tumor was benign, but the horror of the experience has stayed with me. She laughs about stateside cousins freaking out over bathtub centipedes, when she has experienced a botfly larva growing under her skin. Soon she has enough to construct an essay that shows a completely different side of her. She may even send this essay to any of her colleges that accept additional materials. As I read, it is as if the tempest of my thoughts is spelled out on paper. The overflowing sense of hyper-reality in Tim O’Brien’s words of warfare spills into my world. “Most Original” always let me down, and as a result, I hated to be original in any context. In my hometown of New Haven, Connecticut, where normality was…well, the norm, I tried to be a typical student â€" absolutely, perfectly normal. I blended into crowds, the definition of typical. I became a person who refused to surprise people. Unsettled, I turn to my ever-present book for comfort. Today it is The Things They Carried by Tim O’Brien, already worn and slightly crumpled. They say the best books tell you what you already know, resonating with your own thoughts and emotions. Day after day, we rehearsed the last act and day after day I stayed dry-eyed and emotionless. Soon coming out in its third edition, Conquering the College Admissions Essay in 10 Steps is regularly ranked #1 on Amazon among all books on how to write the personal statement. Concise and easy to follow, it turns a very tough assignment into a writing opportunity you can manage with confidence. Opening with a definition, like “Persistence is defined as…,” will probably not be a strong start. His words somehow become my words, his memories become my memories. Despite the high speed of the bullet train, my mind is perfectly still â€" trapped between the narrative of the book and the narrative of my own life. acquired Reach Higher in 2018, giving the roughly 1 million students who apply to a post-secondary institution each year access to invaluable tools and resources. The first time I saw my sister in seven months, she was in the hospital on a stretcher with IVs in her arm. In about 10 days, Rachel is done with her main essay. Because she was enthusiastic about the topic and created a structure before starting to write, it wasn’t as difficult as she’d anticipated. She will start the essay with a snapshot of a children’s Halloween party that she and other embassy teens organized, then discuss being a volunteer monitor for an online local TCK community. She’ll end with her plan to forge new bonds with other international kids, mentioning specific clubs or houses at each university.

Application Essay

Application Essay Remember, admissions officers want to see that you have done serious homework on their institution indicative of students who, if admitted, is likely to actually enroll (the whole “demonstrated interest” thing). The best recipe for creating something unoriginal is beginning from a place of fear. It’s easy to play it super-safe and get sucked-into the clichés and tropes of the “Why Us? In the end you may produce a competent essay, but at a school with a single-digit admit rate, just about everyone will have produced something competent. According to Business Insider, Tufts University and the University of Chicago have both earned reputations for their out-of-left-field essay questions. From this vantage point, Lombardi shared some awesome expert-level college essay tips. We also enlisted the help of a qualified expert in the field. I wrote three distinctly different full drafts for my Common App college essay, all speaking about my Asian-American identity in different ways. Each full draft also had a number of smaller edits. The persuasive personal essay turns ethos, pathos, and logos into a song for our common humanity, by sparking recognition in the reader for another’s foibles, trials, and shared beliefs. And here you thought essays were just painful exercises. Remember that your research will be more effective if you do early research into ALL your schools at once, or at least all the ones that have Why School essays. Originality is celebrated there â€" not in the half-hearted “good for you” way, but in the full-throated “GOOD FOR YOU! One of the first of my fellow students to befriend me wore corset tops and tutus and carried a parasol with which she punctuated her every utterance. Her best friend was a boy with purple hair who once wore a shirt with built in LED lights for Christmas. They were the most popular people in school, in direct contrast to all that was socially acceptable in New Haven. Our peers recognized them as being unique, but instead of ostracizing them or pitying them, the students in Berkeley celebrated them. Did you pick us just because we’ve got a good ranking, or do you actually know something about how we work? Cultural reputation, IE, what the students behave like and what they value? DI correllates to yield, and yield boosts rankings â€" and everybody likes high rankings. Speaking of future drafts, one of the best things you can do is run your essay by a trusted family member, educator, advisor, or friend. Get feedback from somebody whose opinion you respect. This feedback will give you a sense of how well your ideas are coming across to the reader, how compelling your story is, and how you might be able to improve your essay. These additional eyes are also critical when it comes to proofing your work, catching typos you might have missed, and helping to refine writing that is unclear or off-topic. And if the topic is weird, feel free to write a weird essay. Some colleges and universities are actually notorious for their unusual â€" and in some cases, genuinely strange â€" college application essay prompts. Don’t they already know what is great about their school? They’re asking because of something called demonstrated interest. Demonstrated interest is a fancy way of saying, how much do you really want to go to OUR school? You spent your high school years independently pursuing an area of passionâ€"creating your own reading list, seeking out adult mentors, etc. Now, you have gotten the admission officer’s attention. If, after reviewing your composition, you can check both of those boxes, and you’ve avoided the common pitfalls highlighted previously, then you can rest assured that you have mastered the “Why Us? Now that you’ve done strong research and extracted some key facts as well as the ethos of the school, it’s time to show why you belong there. You value substantive and constructive feedback over chasing A’s. You plan on getting a graduate degree and want to immerse yourself in research throughout your undergraduate years. Meredith Lombardi, Associate Director of Outreach and Education at the Common Application, offers a few tips on exactly what admissions officers are seeking from a great application essay. A licensed counselor and published researcher, Andrew’s experience in the field of college admissions and transition spans more than one decade. He has previously served as a high school counselor, consultant and author for Kaplan Test Prep, and advisor to U.S. Congress, reporting on issues related to college admissions and financial aid. Once your essay is complete, have someone who doesn't know the prompt read your application essay. Afterwards, see if the reader felt the essay answered the prompt. You may be surprised how quickly an essay can stray from the prompt.

Essays That Worked

Essays That Worked Over the years, everything--even honoring my grandmother--had become second to school and grades. Before I could resolve my guilt, I had to broaden my perspective of the world as well as my responsibilities to my fellow humans. I became desperately devoted to my education because I saw knowledge as the key to freeing myself from the chains of ignorance. TYPICAL ESSAYS REQUIRED MAJOR ESSAY , YOUR ACADEMIC INTEREST, YOUR MOST IMPORTANT ACTIVITY, and WHY THIS UNIVERSITY THE BEST FOR YOU The most important element in each essay you write is YOU! It is YOU that the admission’s committee is trying to evaluate. Therefore, what better way to communicate the very essence of you than by writing an original and truly impressive college essay. While I physically treat their cancer, I want to lend patients emotional support and mental strength to escape the interruption and continue living. Through my work, I can accept the shovel without burying my grandmother’s memory. However, a simple walk on a hiking trail behind my house made me open my own eyes to the truth. Hurt that my parents had deceived me and resentful of my own oblivion, I committed myself to preventing such blindness from resurfacing. They covered the precious mahogany coffin with a brown amalgam of rocks, decomposed organisms, and weeds. It was my turn to take the shovel, but I felt too ashamed to dutifully send her off when I had not properly said goodbye. I refused to let go of my grandmother, to accept a death I had not seen coming, to believe that an illness could not only interrupt, but steal a beloved life. But the best dimension that language brought to my life is interpersonal connection. When I speak with people in their native language, I find I can connect with them on a more intimate level. One day, my mom brought home fresh cabbages and red pepper sauce. She brought out the old silver bowl and poured out the cabbages, smothering them with garlic and salt and pepper. He would scoff at me when he would beat me in basketball, and when he brought home his painting of Bambi with the teacher’s sticker “Awesome! ” on top, he would make several copies of it and showcase them on the refrigerator door. But I retreated to my desk where a pile of “Please draw this again and bring it to me tomorrow” papers lay, desperate for immediate treatment. Later, I even refused to attend the same elementary school and wouldn’t even eat meals with him. This essay could work for prompt’s 1, 2 and 7 for the Common App. I had been typing an English essay when I heard my cat's loud meows and the flutter of wings. I had turned slightly at the noise and had found the barely breathing bird in front of me. My world is inherently complex, mysterious, and anti-nihilist. I am David Phan, somebody who spends his weekends debating in a three piece suit, other days immersed within the punk rock culture, and some days writing opinionated blogs about underwear. Cancer, as powerful and invincible as it may seem, is a mere fraction of a person’s life. It’s easy to forget when one’s mind and body are so weak and vulnerable. I want to be there as an oncologist to remind them to take a walk once in a while, to remember that there’s so much more to life than a disease. While learning about cancer in school I promised myself that I would memorize every fact and absorb every detail in textbooks and online medical journals. And as I began to consider my future, I realized that what I learned in school would allow me to silence that which had silenced my grandmother. However, I was focused not with learning itself, but with good grades and high test scores. I started to believe that academic perfection would be the only way to redeem myself in her eyes--to make up for what I had not done as a granddaughter. When my parents finally revealed to me that my grandmother had been battling liver cancer, I was twelve and I was angry--mostly with myself. They had wanted to protect me--only six years old at the time--from the complex and morose concept of death. Gingerly, my grandma stood up from the couch in the living room, and as if lured by the smell, sat by the silver bowl and dug her hands into the spiced cabbages. As her bony hands shredded the green lips, a look of determination grew on her face. Though her withered hands no longer displayed the swiftness and precision they once did, her face showed the aged rigor of a professional. For the first time in years, the smell of garlic filled the air and the rattling of the silver bowl resonated throughout the house. The world I come from consists of underwear, nuclear bombs, and punk rockers.

Writing The College Essay

Writing The College Essay Another student sent a life-size blowup of herself attached to balloons. It was supposed to fly…but alas the balloons didn’t work. And yet another student staged a sit-in in an admissions office lobby, refusing to leave until she was able to speak to a few admissions people. Needless to say, this tactic proved as ineffective as the pies and the blow-up person attached to balloons. The admissions counselors thought the pies were quite tasty but this did not lead to an acceptance. Some campuses have a pool of reviewers, while others are more specific. Essaytyper TED gives me the opportunity to help other youth understand new perspectives, by exposing them to the diversity of Austin where culture is created, not just consumed. Once you’ve written down your qualities, examples, and at least 1-2 insights, try outlining your essay. To keep things simple, one example and one insight per paragraph. Help the reader understand which experiences have shaped the qualities you’ve listed. First, it’ll make for a much more interesting story; second, it’ll show that you’ve truly developed these qualities. Go to a college's website and click on a major or group of majors that interest you. Sometimes they’ll briefly summarize a major in terms of what skills it will impart or what jobs it might lead to. Students are often surprised to discover how broadly major-related skills can apply. But if you choose this path, you’ll likely need to use either an uncommon structure or next-level craft to create a stand-out essay. While this sounds simple, the quality of your essay will depend on the strength of your examples and your insights. War has taught me to recognize the power of representation, to find courage in vulnerability, and best of all, to celebrate humor. Within a few weeks, my panel and interview were accessible worldwide, watched by my peers in school, and family thousands of miles away in Pakistan. A montage essay can come together in many different ways. For the purposes of this section, your future goal or career is the theme that connects all the parts of your story. The Type D essay section delves more deeply into other ways of weaving thematic threads. Well-known examples from movies include the “training” montages from Mulan, Rocky, or Footloose, or the “falling in love” montage from most romantic comedies. Although the idea of being so vulnerable initially made me nervous, I soon realized that this vulnerability was essential to my growth. Like the faint scent of mustard oil in my hair, the war followed me to the United States. Here, I was the villain, responsible for causing pain. In the streets, in school, and in Baba’s taxi cab, my family and I were equated with the same Taliban who had pillaged our neighborhood and preyed on our loved ones. For this essay type, I recommend the Montage Structure. A montage is, simply put, a series of moments or story events connected by a common thematic thread. Complete the brainstorming exercises, as these will help no matter which structure you choose. Saying, for example, that you experienced verbal abuse from your father, for example, may be enough; you don’t necessarily need to share the specifics. For the Type A essay, give us a sense of your vision, even if you don’t name your precise career. In The Birth of Sher Khan essay above, for example, you can track both. I never fully escaped war; it’s evident in the chills that run down my spine whenever an untimely call reaches us from family members in Pakistan and in the funerals still playing on Geo News. But I’m working towards a war-free life, internally and externally, for me and the individuals who can share in my experiences, for my family, and for the forgotten Pashtun tribes from which I hail. Take special care to complete the Feelings and Needs Exercise, as it will help you outline your essay. Say you’re interested in becoming a doctor but you’re applying to a medical program with a supplemental prompt asking why you want to become a doctor. If you want to avoid repetition, you might not explicitly mention becoming a doctor at the end of your personal statement. You may also choose to write about the struggles you’ve faced without getting into all the details. You may notice that your completed Feelings and Needs chart maps out a potential structure for your personal statement structure. If you’re not seeing it, try turning your paper so that the challenges are at the top of your page and the effects are below them. If you’re interested in writing about challenges, I highly recommend using the Narrative Structure. Even if you know what you want to be or do in the future, you do not have to put that in your personal statement either. I find the research of Dr.’s Hein Goemans and Gretchen Helmke intriguing and would like the opportunity to learn more about it through the Graduate Visitation program. In college, as I became more politically engaged, my interest began to gravitate more towards political science. While early on my professional ambitions were aimed towards the mental health field, later experiences have redirected me towards a career in academia. For as long as I can remember, I have dreamed of science. During my tour of duty, I witnessed several shipmates suffer from various mental aliments. Driven by a commitment to serve and a desire to understand the foundations of psychological illness, I decided to return to school to study psychology. The winter of my seventh grade year, my alcoholic mother entered a psychiatric unit for an attempted suicide. Mom survived, but I would never forget visiting her at the ward or the complete confusion I felt about her attempt to end her life. The College Essay Timeline

The College Essay Timeline I think it is always best for a student to have an impartial person do the proofing. It is difficult for parents to remain unbiased and often it can cause a lot of added tension between the student and parent. Most schools don’t require a student to declare a major until the end of their sophomore year. That gives you two whole years to work on general courses and explore different majors. If you’re interested in psychology, take a couple of classes to see if it’s right for you. Some professors will allow you to audit a course, to find out whether you will enjoy that major. You won’t get a grade or credit for auditing a course, it’s just for academic exploration. The danger there is that the essay starts sounding more like a forty something adult, instead of a high school senior. There is a certain “voice” that defines a young person about to start college and if it is lacking in an essay, Admissions Directors will quickly pick it up. Yes, it is perfectly okay to have your parents edit your essays. However, the key is to edit, not to write them for you. They can help with typos, grammatical errors, and help you to be clear, concise and compelling. It’s not too late to explore your options and plan for college. Enrolling in a four-year university, a two-year community college, or a trade school will help continue your education. College Foundation of North Carolina, CFNC, is here to help you plan, apply, and pay for school. That’s because the opportunities available inside and outside the classroom will help you take the important next steps into adulthood and your future career. CFNC.org has great tools to help parents and students explore college options. There are also resources to help you apply and pay for higher education. Let us help you figure out how to get the college, now that you understand why you should go to college. You don’t have to know the answer to that question before going to college. They know you best, sometimes more than you know yourself so they may have good suggestions. However, you do want the essays to sound like you; it should be your voice. There should be some consistency between the essays and interviews. The emphasis must be on “help” and not, “take over.” Parents, with only the best intentions, will often offer lots of input and comments, which their child will gratefully accept. The unemployment rate for college grads is also about half the jobless rate of high school graduates. Getting a good-paying job is one of the top reasons why most people go to college. Beyond financial rewards, there are other ways college can change your life. College graduates have more earning potential on average than people who only have a high school diploma. Data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics shows that in 2018, people with a college degree made around $1,198 a week. Someone with a high school diploma earned just $730. That could mean non-college grads are missing out on $1 million in earnings, over a lifetime. It is, however, a good idea for the parents to help the student brainstorm ideas for the essay prior to writing it. If they read through and make light edits, grammatical and typos, yes. If the parent re-writes or writes the essay the answer is no. But resist the urge to rewrite everything in the way you might express it. More than any other element of the application, the essay gives insight into who a student really is. So it should “sound” like the applicant, revealing personality, interests, quirks, personal style, and voice. Some parents can act as a sounding board without taking over the project, while others cannot. The reasons why you should go to college go beyond getting a solid education.

Audience and Purpose The Secret Mission in the ACT Essay

This post was contributed by Compass tutor extraordinaire, Sarah Del Collo.  Sarah is a graduate of Clemson University’s BA and MA programs in English and completed her doctoral work at the Royal Holloway, University of London. She taught composition, Victorian literature, and poetry as an assistant professor at the University of Texas at Tyler before joining the Compass team in 2011. The ACT set some noble goals for its recent revisions to the writing test: to encourage critical thinking, to move students away from simplistic hammer-my-point-home argument, and to encourage writing closer to an academic/professional model. Unfortunately, those goals aren’t explained on the test, leaving many students confused by the complex prompt and uncertain how to integrate its requirements. To achieve the â€Å"precision in thought and purpose† and â€Å"insightful context for analysis† mentioned in the ACT’s scoring rubric, students must look beyond the elements spelled out in the ACT essay prompt and identify its secret mission: recognizing audience and purpose. This can be a challenge for the ACT’s own audience of test takers. Purpose and audience are at the heart of all successful writing, but they aren’t always a natural focus for high school students who have learned about writing by focusing on its elements one at a time. The ACT prompt plays to that approach by saying little about the essay’s overall goals. Instead, it focuses its support on individual elements. The prompt requests â€Å"detailed, persuasive examples,† and it helps students find them by supplying some general examples in the opening paragraph. It asks students to â€Å"evaluate multiple perspectives,† and it makes that easier by presenting interesting points of view for analysis. However, as the tasks grow more complex, the support tapers off. The prompt asks students to analyze and evaluate the perspectives and relate them to their own ideas, but it doesn’t tell them what purpose those tasks serve or what role they should play in the essay, and it is closed-mouthed about what the ACT considers good analysis. Worse, the overall purpose of the essay is a confusing muddle of directives: These instructions foreground evaluation, suggesting at first glance that the goal of the essay is to discuss the strengths and weaknesses of each perspective. The student’s own position is simply to be â€Å"stated,† with the goal of persuasion suggested only obliquely through references to support and examples. Surrounded by injunctions to analyze, evaluate, and explain, the persuasive purpose of the essay is buried, and the possible audience is left to the imagination of a high-school student trying to write an unfamiliar style of essay in forty minutes. The ACT could make the essay task much more accessible by helping students to embrace the roles that audience and purpose play. Instead, students must remind themselves of these fundamental concepts. Fortunately, two simple sentences can help students bring their goal into focus: Imagine that each perspective is a person who holds that point of view. Write an essay that would persuade all three of those people to consider your own perspective. This audience and purpose offer a framework for usefully incorporating the ACT’s requirements. Students know that people stop reading when their ideas are dismissed, ignored, or depicted unfairly. With a little role-playing, they easily recognize the difference between â€Å"Here’s why your idea is ridiculous† and â€Å"I agree with you on your first point. It’s a good goal. However, I think that we need to balance it with this second important goal. What if we try this?† They sense the vital role that this give-and-take of ideas plays in thoughtful persuasion. From there, it’s an easy step to recognizing that the analysis and evaluation required by the ACT can help to identify the common ground and establish the mutual respect that make that give-and-take possible. A checklist like the one below can help students further strengthen their work by using audience and purpose to direct and focus the ACT’s requirements: Analyze and evaluate the perspectives to find common ground with your audience members and learn where you’ll need to work to change their minds. Relate the perspectives to your own ideas in ways that communicate to each audience member that his or her concerns have been understood and fairly represented. Develop a complex and persuasive position by addressing the most important concerns of each audience member. Supply compelling evidence that will sway even a resistant reader through strong logic and effective emotional appeals. Use your essay’s organization, transitions, and wording to appeal to your audience members and lead them toward your persuasive goal. The revised ACT does one great service to student writing: it pushes for stronger critical thinking and a clearer recognition that good writing begins in the thoughtful examination of ideas. By bringing audience and purpose to bear, students can take the ACT’s own goals a step further and produce an essay that is not merely thoughtful, but also purposeful.
